The Delmarva Review opens new submission period on Sept. 1, for the 2010 issue!
The literary journal welcomes short fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction from all writers. The deadline is December 31, 2009, but early submissions are encouraged. NEW - Bay to Ocean Writing Contest, sponsored by ESWA and Delmarva Quarterly, will honor first rate writing in three categories--Short Fiction, Creative Nonfiction and Poetry. It will be open to all writers, regardless of where they live, what type of writing they do, or what subject they choose. The submission period begins in September and runs through December 1, 2009. Only original, unpublished work will be considered. First-place prose and poetry will be considered for publication in Delmarva Quarterly magazine. The winning authors will receive $100 cash and complimentary admission to the Bay to Ocean Conference in February.

Judges will be: author Kate Blackwell for Short Fiction, Sheila Buckmaster, National Geographic Traveler editor at large, for Creative Nonfiction, and award-winning poet Anne Colwell for Poetry.  Contest details will be announced soon and will be posted on the website: www.baytoocean.com.

Emerging Writer Fellowships - The Writer’s Center, in Bethesda, is currently accepting submissions for several competitive Emerging Writer Fellowships. Deadline is August 15. Fellows will be selected from applicants who have published up to two book-length works of prose and up to three book-length works of poetry (self-published and vanity press are not accepted). Writers of any genre, background, or experience are welcome. Selected Fellows will be featured at Emerging Writers Readings and will be invited to lead a Saturday workshop at the Center. A Writers Workshop will be hosted by John Elsberg, of Bogg and Delmarva Review, from 1 to 3 p.m., on Saturday, August 8, at Caroline County Public Library, in Greensboro. John will encourage constructive feedback on effective writing. It’s free, and all are welcome to attend.

2nd Annual Lewes Creative Artists’ Workshop will be held Saturday, August 15 at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., in Lewes, DE (phone 302-645-2733). Workshops cover novel writing, publishing, marketing, poetry, play writing, researching, photography, and pastel painting. Speakers include Billie Travalini, Maribeth Fischer, nonfiction author Tom Coyne, and ten others. Sponsors are: Lewes Public Library, American Pen Women, Diamond State Branch, Delaware Division of Libraries, Delaware Division of the Arts, and the Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild. On Thursday, August 27 - “Poetry at the Beach” will feature readings from poets JoAnn Balingit, Liz Dolan and Maggie Rowe at 7 p.m., at Rehoboth Beach Public Library, 226 Rehoboth Avenue (302-227-8044). On September 24, the program will present JoAnn Balingit, Gail Comorat and Abby Millager, at 7 p.m., at South Coastal Library, 43 Kent Avenue (302-539-5231). The annual program, in its 4th year, is sponsored by the Rehoboth Art League. 

Play Writing Contest - The Hugh Gregory Gallagher Motivational Theatre, in Easton, is sponsoring an “Excellence in Writing” competition for veteran and aspiring playwrights. Deadline for scripts is Dec. 15, 2009. Winners will be announced by February 1, 2010 and will be honored at premiere performances of their new plays during the year. The goal is to raise awareness of disability and discrimination. Guidelines: original monologues or interactive plays of no more than four characters. “The Write Group” welcomes everyone interested in memoir writing for inspiring weekly writing sessions at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, at the St. Michaels Community Center. No experience required. Everyone has a story to write.

Public Radio Delmarva Wants Essays - “Why I live where I live.” Public Radio Delmarva (WSCL), an NPR affiliate in Salisbury, seeks 500-700 word essays on “Why I Live Where I Live,” for broadcast, recorded by the author. Zoetrope Screenplay Contest seeks new creative and compelling film narratives. The deadline is September 8. First prize winner and ten finalists will be considered for film option, development and representation. For more information, see: www.zoetrope.com/contests.

Zoetrope: All-Story Short Fiction Contest is open for submissions until October 1, 2009. The judge is PEN/Hemingway Award-winner Yiyun Li. Story length is less than 5,000 words. G. M. Malliet, of Alexandria, won the 2009 Agatha Award for Best First Novel, for her mystery Death of a Cozy Writer.  Her novel has been nominated for the Anthony Award, the Macavity Award, and several others. Her latest novel, Death and the Lit Chick, was published in the spring. Congratulations!

Robert and Alice Jane Lippson’s new book, Life along the Inner Coast: A Naturalist’s Guide to the Sounds, Inlets, Rivers and Intracoastal Waterway, from Norfolk to Key West, is now available for pre-order on Amazon. It will be released on October 29 by University of North Carolina Press in a hard bound edition, 624 pages including photography and meticulous ink drawings. The Lippsons live in St. Michaels.

Judy Reveal, of Greensboro, will speak and have a book signing at 7 p.m., August 6, at the Caroline County Public Library, in Greensboro. Carlton Spitzer’s new play, “18 Days in July”, will be presented in a benefit performance at 8 p.m., October 9, at Avalon Theatre, in Easton. It is a production of Motivational Theatre Inc., a nonprofit corporation that “celebrates the power of the human spirit” through real life and fictional dramatizations of people challenged by physical, mental and developmental disabilities. Margot Miller, of Easton, will lead a discussion series on “French Literature in Translation,” at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesdays, from November 3 - 24, in the Eagle House Conference Room of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, in St. Michaels. The program will include a reading of Muriel Barberry’s bestseller The Elegance of the Hedgehog, translated by Alison Anderson.
