Worldbuilding applies to nearly every genre, and it can be tempting for authors to add too much. This extensively and thoughtfully described place is surely as fascinating to the reader as it is to the author, right? Not necessarily! Authors risk boring their readers or overwhelming them with information if they don't know when, where, and how to scale back. Excessive worldbuilding can also lead to: info dumps, stalled pacing, inconsistent characters/place descriptions, and drifting away from the plot/main storyline.
